In normal mode, characters were well defined and only when looking close up was slight spidering noticeable. The same could be said for the 5 per cent text document. There was no colour bleeding and street names were about as readable as on other printers here. However, Dell intended users to print letters, web pages and other colour documents on the 720, and our Streetmap colour page on plain paper wasn’t noticeably worse than others. ![]() That’s enough time to print seven A4 photos on the HP Deskjet 5940. It took a mind-numbing nine minutes simply to churn out a single 6 x 4in print at best quality and a foot-tapping 25 minutes, 24 seconds to print our A4 photo montage. But another reason not to print photos is speed. Even from a foot away, grain is easily visible and is enough on its own to ruin colour and mono prints. And we can see why Dell didn’t want to advertise the 720 as a photo printer – the quality falls well short of the other budget printers. The 720 is the only printer that doesn’t support borderless printing, so 6 x 4in and A4 images emerged with 5mm white borders around them. It was odd to see that ‘print a photo’ was one of the options, so naturally we had to try it out. ![]() This is no bad thing, as it’s task driven you select what kind of document you want to print and all the settings are made for you – paper type, size and layout. DELL 720 PRINTER DRIVERInstalling the two cartridges is easy and, not surprisingly, the driver is virtually identical to Lexmark’s, simply with a few Dell logos dotted around. It weighs next to nothing and all you get in the box is a slot-in PSU (like the Lexmark’s), a power cable, driver CD and manual. Like the Canon iP2200 and Lexmark Z735, the 720 is a very basic inkjet. These two are intended for printing text documents and the occasional colour document, even if Dell’s documentation and driver mistakenly refers to the 720 as the ‘Photo Printer 720’. Yes, if I ever need to replace my current 720, I will certainly consider another just like it when doing my pre-purchase research. The 720 is one of only two inkjets on test that can’t officially print photos – Lexmark’s Z735 is the other. However, my main disappointment is the price that Dell charges for replacement cartridges luckily, you can now pick up a third-party cartridge for much less cost, and they last just as long and print with the same quality results. My only negative concerns the ink cartridges life of the black and white cartridge is good, but that of the color cartridge is below my expectations. ![]() The printer is user friendly easily put into service from right out of the box print quality is clear and crisp with very few paper jams. After several hours research, I decided that the best replacement was one of like kind! This printer is used both for personal and business printing in black and white and on rare occasion, printing photos using colored ink. I recently had the need to replace my Dell 720 printer that was purchased five years ago with my computer. I think Canon ink would be a little bit better, but it costs about three times as much. I have a link to the store where I order ink at /ink I personally use a Canon Pixma printer (love it) and buy third-party ink for it. The quality might be a tad bit lower than the real stuff, but it's a whole lot cheaper. Even less expensive are third-party "compatible" ink cartridges that sell for $3 or so. These manufacturers sell replacement ink that doesn't include a new print head, making the ink cheaper to buy. If you print a lot, look into getting a Canon or Epson. I don't actually own this printer, but as far as I know its print quality is just fine. If you don't print much, that's probably OK. All of Dell's printers are made by Lexmark, and like Lexmark printers they tend to require very expensive ink. Why? Dell hopes to make money off the very profitable ink cartridges. ![]() Dell gives this printer away with a lot of the computers it sells.
